About Stillwater County

The Yellowstone River is the longest river in Montana. The fly fishing on the Stillwater and Yellowstone River is excellent. Not by accident is the Yellowstone River internationally known as one of the premiere trout waters in the United States. We also have excellent river rafting, boating, horseback riding, camping, rodeos, hiking, and great hunting. We are at the Gateway to the Beartooth Highway which was described by Charles Kuralt as being one of the most scenic roads in the world. Take a day trip up the Beartooth Highway to Yellowstone Park and explore the beautiful Stillwater Valley from Columbus thru Red Lodge and Cooke City to the Absarokee Beartooth Wilderness.

The “four seasons” are so beautiful: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Yes, we have them all here in Montana. Do you like winter? The big white snowflakes falling down outside your windows as you and your loved one and your pets watch. The flocked trees that you maybe only saw at Christmas time in ornaments and figurines. It is really here in Montana so put your feet up, set the fireplace and enjoy!

Our climate is mild here in Stillwater County being in the Banana Belt area where the snow melts quicker and we do not receive as much snow as other parts of Montana. We also have a dryer climate with lower humidity levels all year-especially in the summer.

In Columbus we have a medical clinic, Stillwater Community Hospital, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors and a convalescent center. We also have an expanded post office, nice grocery store, and good restaurants and shopping. Columbus has a nice golf course and Itch-Kep-Pe Park on the Yellowstone River, and also a small airport. Columbus has good schools including K-6 and 7-12. A lot of buyers have moved here because of the good schools.

We are located just 45 minutes to Billings off of I-90 and there is hardly any traffic on the roads. Billings is Montana’s largest city and the most diverse. With the Billings Logan International Airport and advanced health care, entertainment, educational opportunities, culture and shopping convenience.
